Why The Gurus Are Wrong About Your Time Management

I’m sure you’ve read this online somewhere whether in the forums or some e-mail that you received from the guru “flavor of the month” preaching to you about your time management.

It goes something like this…..

The Gurus want you to believe that you should stop wasting your time by -

* Going to forums and hanging out reading and/or participating in discussions
* They tell you to stop reading your local and national news online
* They tell you to quit reading promotional e-mails that you get pounded with in your inbox every day and to unsubscribe to all the mailing lists that you’re on
* They’ say to stop reading blog posts after blog post

The ideology behind this is that if you were to quit “wasting your time” online that you get more accomplished in your business, thus increasing your traffic, your sales, and your profits.

Heres why that’s not only bad advice but can actually set you back and leave you clueless (literally)

Well here’s the deal….

- Let’s just say that you stopped going to forums reading and participating
- Let’s just say you stopped reading your local or national news online
- Let’s just say you stopped reading promotional e-mails and unsubscribed from all the lists that you’re on
- Let’s just say that you stop reading blog posts
- Let’s just say,…(well you get the picture)

Here’s what’ll happen In a few simple words….

You’d be clueless.

You would have no idea what’s going on, not only in your market, but in the world as well.

* You would no longer be able to to keep up on the latest trends and marketing techniques
* You would have no idea what the latest buzz is so you can tweak your marketing campaigns to coincide with the buzz or ride with it
* You would have no idea if you are launching a product of the same type, or at the same time as a similar product
* You’d be virtually shut down to the most powerful medium known to the world and your business would suffer massively
* Your competitors would pass you by and you’d be left in the virtual dust

Here’s what you should do instead

Analyze what you do on a daily basis and schedule a specific amount of time that you can devote to doing these tasks. Yes I do call these tasks because actually they’re very critical to your business no matter what niche you’re in.

But the trick is you have to put yourself on a short time scale by allocating 10, 15, or even 30 minutes for each of these type of daily tasks.

Map it out if you have to, in fact I highly suggest that you do that. Mind maps work great.

In fact a way that I set mind maps up is I make virtual task maps in a mind map program. So all you have to do is click on each task on the flowchart you’re taken directly to that task that has been pre-determined and allocated a specific amount of time.

Do this and you can’t go wrong, you’ll get the best of both worlds

You’ll be able to do the things that you not only enjoy doing but can also help you build your business no matter what niche you’re in.

If you’d like me to help you mind map your business so that you can start working laser targeted, streamline your workflow and increase your productivity then grab one of my coaching and training packages and I’ll work with you one-on-one.

    Hi Frank,

I totally agree. Not only do you have to stay on top of the latest marketing techniques, but also on top of the latest changes in your niche.

The only challenge to master is to do these task in an organized fashion and not to just float around.

    Great post,

    Exactly Evgania,

I’ve actually developed a “dashbboard” based on mind mapping software for my business and for some of my clients and it has completely eliminated any guess work of what or where they should be spending their time.

    Thanks for leaving your comment…

    Sincerely

Really interesting Frank - you’ve got a kind of “middle way” between info overload and being clueless.

Your dashboard sounds interesting - any plans to share it with your readers?

    Amen Frank,

The secret to Success for all the
    wonderful associates over the past
    1/2 Century is ….

    We possessed Great Awareness!

The ability to be on the leading edge of Markets, trends and Networking comes from diligent, mundane Daily Tasks.

    To quote a dear friend..
“The amount of Money you are allowed to keep is in direct Proportion to the Amount of Awareness You Possess”

Just think how cash consolidation over the past 2 years has allowed so many to ROCK with real Estate and Equities in just the past month!

Awareness allowed any Boob to see the handwriting, and capitalize!

Hi Alex, yes there really has to be some kind of balance in place, and a lot of self decipline, even if you were to map out your tasks on a clickable map (something I’ll be soon offering to my readers)

You are spot on here Frank..

Not only are you right, but getting involved in current goings on is VITAL to staying on your game as a marketer, in your own market just like you said and in the world. With the fast pace and constantly changing climate and trends it pays to stay connected..

    Hey Jay,

Thanks for posting your thoughts on this…

What cracks me up is that you hear people complain that they get bombed with e-mails everyday that try to sell them something.

What they should be doing is analyzing to see how the marketer is marketing so they can pick up a few things and integrate that into their own sales process.

In fact some people would be blown away to see how many lists I’m on.

Why am I on so many lists?

    In a nutshell due diligence.

When I get a barrage of e-mails promoting a specific new launch I can tell how big a product launch is by the type of marketers who send me the e-mails.

I also analyze how each marketer is promoting a launch as well.

Then there’s the e-mails in between all those promotional e-mails for launches.

I analyze what they’re doing as it will tell me what the market trends are and what people want.

Imagine if I unsubscribed to all those lists?

I would not know what the hell is going on in the market, period.

Does that mean I have to buy from each one of those promotional e-mails I receive?

    Absolutely not!

What smart marketers are doing is subscribing to lists of people they want to follow. Kind of like twitter, you follow the people to see what’s happening in the marketplace.

Okay this is getting a bit long..lol

I agree. I remember reading the 4 hour work week dude saying don’t read the newspaper or keep up with news. There are some things that just aren’t outsourced. I mean for crying out loud to be a good voter you have to know what’s going on and decide for your self.

I keep subscribed to IM lists because I want to keep my ear to the ground and know what the flavor of the month (launch) is.

So yeah, the key is to keeping a balance

    Frank,

That’s a great post. I really do agree with your point of view. It’s more important to see how you spend your time as oppose to how much. And as for the clueless part.

Definitely,if it wasn’t for blogs like yours (Thanks by the way!) and places like the warrior forum. I’m be in ostrich with my head in the wrong sandbox. :)

    Thanks for the valuable information!
